No Woman Left Behind: Advocating for Period Dignity Across Cameroon

Menstruation does not pause for a crisis and it does not stop behind prison walls. On 28 May 2026, HEDECS Cameroon (Health Development Consultancy Services) honoured World Menstrual Hygiene Day with bold, on-the-ground action in two cities, proving that building a #PeriodFriendlyWorld means reaching every woman, everywhere.

HEDECS Cameroon: Turning Awareness Into Action
Every year, World Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) observed globally on 28 May shines a spotlight on the millions of women and girls who lack access to safe menstrual health resources. For HEDECS Cameroon, part of our commitment is advancing sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) nationwide, awareness is only the starting point.

This year, under the theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” HEDECS deployed two simultaneous, targeted interventions; one in Bamenda and one in Yaoundé each responding to the specific needs of their community. Together, they form a powerful statement about inclusive menstrual health advocacy.

Bamenda
Restoring Dignity Behind Bars: HEDECS at Bamenda Central Prison

Among the populations most overlooked in menstrual health discourse are incarcerated women. For female inmates at the Bamenda Central Prison, managing a natural biological process with dignity is an uphill battle, complicated by limited access to health information, a shared correctional environment, and near-zero access to sanitary materials.

Recognising this critical gap, HEDECS deployed an expert technical team, led by the Health Officer and the Focal Person for Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) to transform MH Day into a life-changing intervention.

What HEDECS Did

Targeted Health Education Sessions
Intensive, compassionate talks on menstrual cycle mechanics, cycle tracking for health self-awareness, and hygiene management in a shared correctional setting.

Menstrual Disorders Awareness
The HEDECS team broke down the causes of severe pain and irregular cycles, educating inmates on when and how to advocate for medical intervention.

Open Q&A — A Safe Space to Speak
In a highly interactive session, inmates openly shared personal health concerns, dismantled deep-seated misconceptions, and received real-time professional medical guidance.

Sanitary Pad Distribution
To directly confront period poverty within the facility, HEDECS distributed sanitary pads to every female inmate — providing the material relief needed to manage cycles safely and with dignity.

Reproductive health is a fundamental human right. Creating a period-friendly world means ensuring every woman — regardless of her circumstances — is supported, respected, and never left behind.

Through this targeted prison outreach, HEDECS Cameroon demonstrated that a truly period-friendly world has no exceptions. No address. No circumstance. No walls that exclude a woman from her right to health, dignity, and information.

Yaoundé
Turning Students Into Leaders

From Participants to Peer Educators: HEDECS Yaoundé’s Training of Trainers
At the HEDECS Yaoundé office, the philosophy was bold: don’t just educate — multiply. Rather than a conventional health talk, the team hosted a dynamic Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop for secondary and university students, equipping the next generation to become confident, community-based menstrual health advocates.

Highlights of the Yaoundé Workshop

Practical Personal Hygiene & Eco-Friendly Disposal
Participants learned evidence-based bodily care practices and environmentally responsible menstrual product disposal, building habits that last a lifetime.

Hands-On Cycle-Tracking Bangle Craft
The workshop’s standout activity: each participant crafted a personalized bracelet using red, orange, and white beads to represent the phases of her own cycle — visualizing the science of her body in her own hands.

Taboo-Breaking Story Circle
An open, safe sharing circle where participants discussed their first-period experiences breaking stigma through vulnerability, solidarity, and shared truth.

Sanitary Pad Distribution & Peer Educator Certification
Every participant received sanitary pads and walked away certified as a peer educator ready to champion menstrual health in their schools and neighborhoods.

Why HEDECS’ MH Day Impact Matters in Cameroon
In Cameroon, period poverty remains a significant barrier to education, health, and dignity. Studies across sub-Saharan Africa show that lack of menstrual hygiene resources contributes to school absenteeism, increased risk of reproductive tract infections, and persistent social stigma. For incarcerated women, these challenges are magnified further by systemic neglect.

HEDECS Cameroon’s 2026 interventions directly address each of these dimensions, delivering not just products, but knowledge, solidarity, and systemic change. By training young peer educators, HEDECS ensures that the impact of this one day echoes through schools and communities for months and years to come.

Through every pad distributed, every question answered, and every young woman trained as a peer educator, HEDECS Cameroon affirms that menstrual health is not a privilege, it is a right. And we will not stop until every woman in Cameroon can exercise it freely.
