Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Pink October), HEDECS Cameroon took its breast cancer awareness campaign to the Bamenda Food Market on 20 October 2026. The team reached approximately 500 people, including 350 women and 150 men, with lifesaving information on early detection and screening.

Bringing Breast Cancer Awareness to Where People Are

Guided by this year’s theme, “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” our team engaged traders, shoppers and other community members through:

  • Interactive sensitization sessions
  • Distribution of educational flyers
  • Handwritten awareness messages displayed on cardboard

Taking the message to a busy market meant we could speak directly with people in their daily environment, many of whom might not otherwise have access to health information.

What We Talked About

Conversations at the market focused on:

  • The importance of early detection of breast cancer
  • Regular breast screening
  • Recognizing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer
  • Addressing common myths and misconceptions about the disease

Men Have a Role Too

Breast cancer affects families and communities, not only women. Men at the market were encouraged to support the women in their lives, including mothers, wives, sisters and daughters, in seeking timely screening and medical care.

More Than Wearing Pink

For HEDECS Cameroon, Pink October is more than wearing pink. It is about bringing lifesaving information closer to communities, breaking the silence around breast cancer, and encouraging people to take charge of their health.

Our message remains simple:

Know the signs. Get screened. Encourage someone else. Early detection saves lives.
