Mbororos in Cameroon

Mbororos in Cameroon

The journey of the inclusion of the Mbororos in Oshie has not been an easy journey. The then Fon was very instrumental and industrious in the development of these normads, both economically, psycho-socially. That is the integral development of the mbororos into oshie culture was quite a challenge. Getting the marginalized the Mbororo community involved in the development of Oshie has been a very laudable initiative.

But it has been challenging as it required lot of resources to be put in place such as human, time, finances and materials. It is hoped that with this achievement, it will bring about increase in participation of Mbororos in the Council Development Plan of Njikwa.

The goal of reaching out to all with Mbororos thereby improving and promoting health and education which will be reached at regional and national level.

The Mbororo Social Cultural and Development Association (MBOSCUDA) is the umbrella organization for the Mbororos in Cameroon. The Mbororos are a minority tribe that has been largely excluded from most development programs (including health, education and socio-economic empowerment). They have therefore tried to survive and succeed through their own creative as well as subsistent means. They mostly live on pastoral livestock and thrift farming. They are mostly uneducated and semi literates. These life styles and poor educational background makes them very vulnerable to marginalization. Yet the Mbororos are peaceful people, dutiful, compliant to laws, societal norms and institutions. HEDECS has been working in these communities for the past 2 years on health and other development issues. HEDECS has been able to facilitate the incorporation of Mbororo community in crucial and strategic health programs like mutual health schemes and adding their voice to health issues at districts level of the government hospitals. This she has done via sensitization campaigns, meetings, workshops and advocacy meetings.

Achievements:

  • A Mbororo representative for the NWSFH regional office has been decided upon by MBOSCUDA.
  • Monitoring tools will be developed and disseminated during the training sessions on Mbororo integration into MHO and Dialogue Structures.
  • Advocacy at local, regional and national level for inclusion of Mbororos in MHO and Dialogue Structures both as decision makers and beneficiaries is ongoing.
  • A “Mbororo Voice for Health” platform has been set up and a memorandum of understanding signed by the beneficiaries and stakeholders
